Losing Your Spiritual Appetite

When you lose your spiritual appetite, your walk becomes frozen.

Have you ever been hungry and waited too long to eat?  The strangest thing happens:  you go from being so hungry that you can hardly stand it to barely caring if you eat at all.  You’d think that the longer you waited to eat, the hungrier you’d be, but no.  It doesn’t work like that.  Actually, when you wait too long to eat, your stomach weakens your perception of hunger so you can’t accurately tell how you feel.

I’ve read things about kids in Third World countries who are starving.  When they go without eating long enough, their hunger pains get numb, their bellies swell, and they get sick (or die) if nutrients aren’t reintroduced slowly so their bodies can adjust.  It reminds me of what happens when a person is near freezing to death:  they go from being extremely cold to feeling warm and sleepy as their bodies shut down.  What happens is that their bodies change their perception of the truth so they no longer feel cold.  In fact, coming back to warmth is painful!  Warming up too quickly causes their fingers, arms, legs, and toes start to burn and tingle.  Being numb is more comfortable!

This same thing can happen to your spirit:  If you lose your spiritual appetite long enough, your spirit will get numb to the pain of being distant from God.   You will start to lose your passion, your vision, and your faith, which are all nutrients that your spirit lives on.  If you keep on this way, it won’t be long before you are malnourished and indifferent.  You will grow cold to the things that once excited you and your real self, the one God made you to be, will begin to be FROZEN.
